Tanzimat reforms were a period of reforms in the Ottoman Empire from 1839 to 1876. Tanzimat reforms aimed to modernize the Ottoman Empire, and move it from old theocratic notions of a state to modern European ones. • • The strange thing about the Tanzimat reforms is that they contributed to the downfall of the Ottoman Empire instead of preserving it. The Tanzimat reforms literally meant reorganization and they accomplished a lot, most importantly military and tax reforms. Yet these reforms were not sufficient, and the adoption of European customs and traditions during Tanzimat lead to opposition from various sectors, most notably Namik Kemal of the Young Turks who opposed the Tanzimat reforms for indiscriminately adopting Western ideas . • I'm Rishi, and welcome to History Supply!
