In this episode of Rail Away, we will enjoy a rail route along the German part of the river Danube. The route starts in the town of Donaueschingen, on the edge of the Black Forest, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Donaueschingen is considered the place where the Danube originates. The train journey takes travelers through nature parks, and past castles and monasteries. • The carrier on the first part of this journey on the Donaubahn is provided by Deutsche Bahn. We pass the impressive abbey of Beuron, where the Dutch painter Jan Verkade alias Father Willibrord lived and worked for many years. He was a son of the well-known cookie manufacturer from Zaandam. His art was not for everyone, which meant that his work was occasionally painted over with a white brush. We also visit Burg Hohenzollern. Hundreds of thousands of tourists are drawn to the grandeur and history of this place every year. • In Sigmaringen we change to trains of the Hohenzollerische Landesbahn. These special trains, with trapezoidal windows, take us through the mountains of the Swabian Alb to the final destination of this episode: Gammertingen. • In this episode of Rail Away, can be seen in its entirety on NPO2 (Dutch television) on Monday, December 27 at 20:05. • The Rail Away travel program has been broadcasted since 1996.
