Educational video describing the condition known as Elhers - Danlos Syndrome • This is an example of a patient suffering from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. It is an inherited condition that affects the collagen in the connective tissues. Collagen helps to resist deformation of the joints. A majority of the body’s composition is made up of collagen, collagen acts like “glue” which hold the joints together and it is also the main material within the ligaments that act to stabilize the joints. • Symptoms of this condition include hypermobile and hyperflexible joints that extend beyond the normal range of movement, the patient may appear to be “double jointed”. May be able to bend the knee backward in hyperextension with possibility of the joint dislocating easily. • Collagen is also present within the skin, muscles, blood vessels and internal organs. Rupture of blood vessels or internal organs may occur.
