The year: 1835. The dispute: Territorial claim of the Toledo Strip. Toledo holds geographical importance as a port city at the base of the Maumee Bay. The conflict arises out of differing interpretations of the boundary lines set by the Northwest Ordinance, a federal policy with a cockeyed mapping of the Great Lakes region. Within Michigan’s application for statehood, the Toledo Strip is to be included inside its border, but Ohio holds steadfast to the land. A military standoff ensues with a proliferation of some 1,600 troops; Ohioans stationed south in Perrysburg and Michiganders in Toledo proper. Politically advantageous to President Andrew Jackson, he seeks to contain his Democratic electoral votes within Ohio. Michigan ultimately succumbs to federal pressure and accepts the Upper Peninsula in lieu of the Toledo Strip in its bid for statehood. The war’s human cost: one wounded soldier. • Music: For We Are Many - Cooper Cannell • Read by Alex Stickroth - / estelamercado.pnessa • Written by Paul Esper • • Please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] • WEBSITE - https://www.oneminutehistory.com • PATREON - / oneminutehistory • FACEBOOK - / oneminutehistory • INSTAGRAM - / oneminutehistory • TWITTER - / 1minhistory
