In theory, the bent-over barbell row is a solid exercise. In real life, though, it’s a challenging lift to perform well, which makes it one of the most commonly butchered movements in the gym. A number of issues can occur: bouncing, rounding the back, excessively flaring the elbows, poor neck positioning, standing far too upright (e.g., 45+ degree torso angle), etc.⁣ • ⁣ • The reality is that a sound bent-over barbell row requires an encyclopedia of things to occur simultaneously. You need to be able to 1) hip hinge properly, 2) hold that pristine hip hinge isometrically against a heavy load, 3) maintain stability throughout the lower body, pelvis, and spine, and 4) keep the spine and pelvis stacked while creating dynamic tension through the musculature of the upper back. Add in the fact that an anteriorly loaded bar is constantly challenging all of these intricacies, and things can get ugly – fast. ⁣If any of these links in the chain fall apart, the bent-over barbell row not only fails to deliver a meaningful effect on the targeted musculature... But also puts the body into vulnerable positions, which is especially risky when training higher rep ranges in the presence of fatigue.⁣ • ⁣ • A better alternative? The chest supported row with KBs. Same pattern, same feel, same motion. The difference is that the spine is pinned into a neutral position and the isometric hip hinge isn’t a concern, which means the emphasis can be placed less on proper positioning and more on the targeted musculature. Plus, the inherent setup of the kettlebells as opposed to the dumbbells allows for a more natural rotational grip position, which doesn’t lock the shoulders into any particular position.⁣ • Do you want to shatter your expectations of what you're physically capable of?
