Crimson Clay Crimson Glaze

Here’s another vessel’s creation shown from beginning to end, this time it’s the turn of this crimson clay and glaze being fashioned into a very simple angular bowl. Whilst the bright red tone of this PS-690 stoneware is rather extraordinary, when fired in a reduced atmosphere, such as you might find in a gas kiln, the crimson colour is mostly lost as it turns black, it’s a shame in some ways as the warm red is visually rather captivating. This time round I’ll be coating it in a thick layer of crimson glaze so that once glaze fired it ends up resembling the soft clay at the start. • • The best thing about this groggy combination of clays, (I mix it down with my usual high iron body), is that the stoneware holds its shape really well. It’s been a long time since I’ve worked regularly with coarse clays and I’d forgotten just how forgiving they are when you’re throwing using them. It can overhang, be sodden in water and worked hard and still it keeps its shape, which is a great quality as I intend on making some taller jars and vases using this mixture of materials. • • The only downside about it is that it seems to pluck away on the foot a tiny amount, this is when small fragments of the foot of the bowl fuse to the kiln shelf, causing them to be ripped out of the bowl itself. It’s a pain and I’ve learnt that now, which means all of my red vessels from here on out will be fired on waddings, (a clay like mixture of 50% coarse alumina hydrate and 50% kaolin). It’s gently stuck on the very bottom of the bowl’s foot, like tiny props just to raise it up a touch. I’m hoping it’ll make all the difference. • • #stoneware #clay #satisfying #craft #pottery #asmr #maker #ceramics
