Bīdrī ware is a one of its kind antique Indian handicraft that produces metal objects ornamented with intricate inlay work using pure silver. • This beautiful craft originated in Bidar, Karnataka under the patronage of Bahamani Sultans in 14th-15th centuries, especially during the times of Sultan Ahmed Shah Wali Bahamani. • The metal commonly used is an alloy composed mostly of zinc with a small amount of copper, darkened to achieve a black colour that does not fade. The use of special mitti(earth) which is available only in and around the Bidar fort to give the metal a permanent black hue, makes Bidri ware one of the most exclusive handicrafts in the world • The Birdriware undergoes an eight-stage process. The eight stages are moulding, smoothening by file, designing by chisels, engraving by chisel and hammer, pure silver inlaying, smoothening again, buffing and finally oxidising by soil and ammonium chloride. • Creating this art work is a very laborious task, producing just a small goblet might take eight craftsmen and 15 days. • Sultans of those days used the Bidri ware for everyday use in the form of Hookahs, wine glasses, dinner plates etc. Presently Bidri ware is generally used as decorative items or for small practical purposes as visiting card holders, Jewellery boxes, flower vases etc • Bidri craft is highly regarded worldwide for its beauty and elegance. The artisans of Bidar received numerous domestic and international awards, the recent one being Kala Nidhi award at the 30th Surajkund International Crafts Mela-2016. • To order Bidri ware contact us @ http://affectionz.in/
