India / Asia Collision - Formation of the Himalayas • CR Scotese PALEOMAP Project • This simple animation shows a cross-sectional view of the collision of India (left side) with Asia (right side), and the resulting formation of the Himalayas and Tibetan plateau. The horizontal line across the diagram is sea level. Major Events: 1) Oceanic lithosphere attached to Indian continent is subducted and pulls India northward, 2) Sediment is scraped-off the ocean floor forming islands, 3) The Indian continent collides with the Asian continent, 4) Trapped sediments and bits of oceanic crust are obducted to form the Himalayan ophiolite belt, 5) slices of the top part of the Indian continent are thrust back towards India to form the front ranges of the Himalayan mountains, 5) As Indian continental crust is pulled down below Asia, the crust thickens and the Tibetan Plateau rises 5-8 km above sea level. The animation starts about 55 million years ago and ends at the present-day. The 2015 earthquake in Nepal took place along the second major fault zone shown in this animation. • Please cite this animation as: Scotese, C.R., 2015.
