Historically, it served as a prosperous market port for the Amalfi Republic from the 15th to the 17th century. While facing economic challenges in the mid-nineteenth century, with over half the population emigrating, primarily to America, Positano rebounded in the 1950s as it transformed from a modest fishing village into a popular tourist destination.
