Laura Collister, Chief Executive at Wellways, describes what we do, the mental health and disability services that we provide, and our philosophy and approach to providing support for people with mental health issues and disabilities, as well as their families, friends and carers. • Wellways works with people to define their own outcomes and Laura explains that the Wellways Model of Care recognises that working with an individual alone is never enough to help someone create a good life: it is integral to also work at a family and community level. • Stigma surrounding mental health and disability is a major issue for people and leads to exclusion. Wellways education programs are designed to combat this stigma. Led by people with lived experience, they are designed to help change attitudes and create more welcoming communities. • Laura explains that Wellways advocacy campaigns are always informed by the lived experience of consumers, families, friends and carers. Wellways uses these campaigns to try to inform state and federal government policies with the aim of ultimately creating an environment that supports recovery and allows people to thrive in their communities. • Quality is of the utmost importance in everything that Wellways does. Consumers and carers are involved in the recruitment of staff and there is a process for directing feedback from consumers and families about their experience and interactions with Wellways. • Laura explains that the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an exciting time, offering opportunities for people to access services they haven’t been able to access before. • Visit http://wellways.org to find out more about Wellways and our mental health and disability services.
