Learn about the District of Sechelt, BC’s Water Resource Centre project, for which it won a 2016 FCM Sustainable Communities Award in the Water category. Read the case study: http://www.fcm.ca/x28654.xml • Sechelt’s new Water Resource Centre is a community-friendly facility that uses an innovative, odour-free method to turn wastewater into high-quality reclaimed water and Class A compost. • Located in the middle of town between residential housing and the Sechelt Marsh nature reserve, the new Sechelt Water Resource Centre exceeds the treatment capacity of the two older wastewater treatment plants it replaces. The treated effluent is so clean that it eliminates the need to extend their outfall pipe into the Pacific Ocean. • The facility is designed to meet LEED® Gold certification and includes: • • a 12-kilowatt solar energy roof • • a heat recovery system • • comprehensive odour-control technology • • tertiary treatment using Ultrafiltration membranes and UV • It is the first in North America to use a sequencing batch reactor process in which plants are suspended over treatment tanks enclosed in a greenhouse. The plant roots enhance the biological treatment process by making it more efficient, reducing energy and space requirements, and controlling odour. The landscaped grounds are fully accessible to the public and include habitat restoration of a small stream area. The centre, built with support from FCM’s Green Municipal Fund, also hosts educational tours. • The Federation of Canadian Municipalities Sustainable Communities Awards celebrate the best sustainability and environmental initiatives in municipalities of all sizes and regions across Canada. • Established in 2000, the awards generate national and local recognition for sustainability projects that take an integrated approach, leading to environmental, economic and social benefits. • The awards are open to all municipal governments and their private-sector partners and are presented in six categories: energy, transportation, waste, water, neighbourhood development and brownfields. • Learn more: • FCM Sustainable Communities Awards 2016 Winners: http://www.fcm.ca/home/awards/fcm-sus... • About FCM’s Sustainable Communities Awards: http://www.fcm.ca/home/awards/fcm-sus... • Federation of Canadian Municipalities: www.fcm.ca • FCM’s Green Municipal Fund: www.fcm.ca/gmf
