Outdoor grilling has become increasingly popular, and because of all of the fancy new grills it’s also become more fun. And when a homeowner spends a lot of money on a grill, they want it look nice at their home. That’s why many are custom building outdoor barbeques. • Barbeque islands can be made out of stucco, stone or brick. All are good for outdoors. But we went with brick because it’s more sturdy and will last a little longer. It also matched the house. • Before installers can build a bbq, the homeowner needs to buy the grill. That’s because the island will be build around the grill so the installer needs to know the exact size of the grill. • Once they see the grill and come up with a building plan, they’ll build a base. To do that, they’ll excavated six inches of dirt and then put 2 x 4 framing around the area and put cement inside the frame to make a concrete base. The base is vital so that the grill won’t shift as the dirt moves around. • To save the homeowner some money and the installer some time, the inside of the island will be built with concrete blocks. It takes about five bricks to make up one block, so by using the blocks, installers can get the bbq built a little faster. • installers set the blocks in morter. In this application they built up four rows high. And they put wall ties in between some of the blocks to provide extra support for the bricks. • Once the blocks are in place all around the outside of the island, it’s time to install the brick facade. • We used Acme brick, and installers used white morter to match the brick and the house. • As far as the height is concerned, there is no set height for a grill. The installer and homeowner just need to confer and decide what height is most comfortable for those who will be using the barbeque. We built ours up 3 ½ feet tall. • Depending on if you’ll use gas or propane, modifications will have to be made. Propane cannot be put under the grill because it’s a fire hazard. So it must be on the side, in it’s own compartment. So the installers built a compartment to hold the propane and put a door on it for easy access. They also left a hole in the island for ventillation. This is needed because fumes can build up from the propane and it can become conbustible. • If you have a gas grill, you’ll need to call a plumber to come in and make modifications. Most likely, they’ll have to dig a trench behind the island and bring the line in through the back. • Plants and trees are also potential fire hazards, so if you build you grill near vegetation, the plants will have to be removed. • Homeowners have several options for the counter top. They can use tile, brick, or stone. We used stone because the stone comes in bigger pieces which creates less morter joints and makes a flatter working surface. • The grill on our segment was provided by Barbeques Galore. It’s a stainless steel Turbo grill and has two burners. • It usually takes two to three days to build an outdoor barbeque. It cost $1,500 for the labor and materials. The grill cost an extra $1,200. The homeowners could have spent less money and gotten a prefabricated barbeque. But instead, the got a custom island that looks like it was built with the house. • Gardening and Landscaping: •    • Gardening and Landscaping   • Great DIY Projects from Your New House: •    • DIY - Do It Yourself with Your New House
