DIY Panoramic Head for Your Camera

Many cameras today have a panoramic mode for creation of panoramas. While this capability is pretty good, it can be better. Using a panoramic head will allow you to create larger panoramas with more detail as well as a variety of formats, including Virtual Reality (VR) configurations that can be posted on your website (although not currently on YouTube). • The panoramic head eliminates the parallax that makes it difficult to stitch multiple frames into large panoramas. While parallax is not so much of a problem if you shoot distant landscapes, when you have objects nearby, parallax becomes a much bigger problem. Creating 360x180 panoramas inside a room, for example, would be nearly impossible without a panoramic head. • The design of my panoramic head mounts the camera in the portrait position to get the most vertical distance with each frame. This helps insure that there will be some detail that can be used to establish control points when shooting multiple row panoramas. My 360x180 panoramas typically use 3 rows of 8 frames using a 10.5mm fisheye lens on the D7000. • This video shows how I made my panoramic head. It is inexpensive and easy to build from materials you may have laying around. The video doesn't provide detailed measurements because each camera is a little different. The camera I used for the video is a Nikon D7000, so you can get an idea of the size of my pano head. It also shows how much weight it can support. While I show two sample panoramas shot using the D7000 and the panoramic head, you can't really get the feel of the VR. If you go to a page of my website, I have posted the last sample of this video with which you can interact at: • http://montanamonk.com/little_planet/... • You can also see an indoor panaorama at: • http://montanamonk.com/mission_web/mi... • The stills for the panoramas were shot with the Nikon D7000. Stills and video for the rest of the documentation were shot with the Nikon Coolpix P610. Video was assembled and edited with Sony Movie Studio. Stitching of the panoramas was done with PTGui.
