In her talk, Judy will look at the wealth of learnings, customs and traditions that exist already in our combined religious and cultural teachings. Our fascination with the new can distract us from the extraordinary value of the old. We need to reclaim this accumulated wisdom to bring about a fertile common ground, where people from all cultures and religions come together to the same table and the same garden to share and build a rich bank of educational resources for the future. • • Every faith celebrates food as a spiritual gift and every faith and culture has something powerful to say about our role in protecting the natural world. Judy argues that by learning from our past about planting and preparing food and caring for the earth, and then engaging with the practice as a community, it provides a real impetus for positive sustainable and social change and empowers us to do, and be, more. • • Judith is the founder of the not-for-profit organisation, FoodFaith, an initiative that emerged from her PhD research at the University of Technology Sydney’s Institute for Sustainable Futures. FoodFaith aims to forge connections between different faiths and cultures by celebrating food customs and practices and by drawing on shared wisdoms about food, farming, cooking and sustainability. • • As a journalist who has worked for over 25 years with a number of Australia’s leading newspapers including the Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian and a number of influential current affairs television programs, Judy is only too aware how bad news can overwhelm the good and allow us to lose sight of the positive around us. • • This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
