The world remembers him as the man with the voice of an angel, yet Harry Nilsson—the man behind iconic songs like “Without You” and “Everybody’s Talkin’”—remains one of the most elusive figures in music history. How does a boy from Brooklyn, raised in a household plagued by poverty and abandonment, transform into one of the most lauded singer-songwriters of his era? And why, at the height of his fame, did he seemingly choose to dismantle his own career? The answers lie in a tale as enigmatic and extraordinary as the man himself. By 1972, Harry Nilsson was riding high. His album Nilsson Schmilsson had catapulted him to global stardom. Yet, while most artists would seize the moment to solidify their place in history, Nilsson turned inward, eschewing the spotlight in favour of artistic experimentation and a hedonistic lifestyle. • What followed was a journey marked by soaring highs and devastating lows: collaborations with legends like John Lennon, battles with addiction, and a series of choices that mystified even his closest friends. This is the story of Harry Nilsson, a man who lived life on his own terms, for better or worse. • Harry Edward Nilsson III was born on June 15, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York. His early life was anything but idyllic. His father abandoned the family when Harry was just three years old, leaving his mother, Bette, to raise him and his younger half-sister on her own. The Nilsson household was fraught with instability and financial hardship, but young Harry found solace in music. • Despite his difficult circumstances, Harry’s natural talent was evident from a young age. He possessed a near-photographic memory and an extraordinary ear for melody. His grandmother, a vaudeville performer, also encouraged his musical inclinations, teaching him songs on the piano. By the time the family relocated to Los Angeles in the 1950s, Harry was already honing his vocal and songwriting skills, inspired by the burgeoning rock ‘n’ roll scene. • In the early 1960s, Nilsson’s big break came in an unlikely setting: as a computer operator at a Los Angeles bank. During his night shifts, he began writing songs and recording demos, often sleeping only a few hours a day. His relentless work ethic paid off when his compositions caught the attention of music publisher Perry Botkin Jr. • With Botkin’s encouragement, Nilsson’s songwriting career took off. Artists like the Monkees and Glen Campbell began recording his songs, giving him a foothold in the industry. But it was his own unique voice that would eventually steal the spotlight. In 1966, Nilsson signed with RCA Records and released his debut album, Pandemonium Shadow Show, which caught the ear of none other than the Beatles. • In 1968, Harry Nilsson’s life changed forever when the Beatles publicly declared him their favourite American artist. John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s endorsement propelled Nilsson into the limelight, earning him a devoted following. His cover of Fred Neil’s “Everybody’s Talkin’”—featured in the film Midnight Cowboy—became a massive hit, earning Nilsson his first Grammy Award. • But Nilsson wasn’t content to be merely a singer of other people’s songs. His 1971 album Nilsson Schmilsson showcased his songwriting prowess and yielded hits like “Coconut” and “Jump into the Fire.” However, it was his heartbreaking rendition of “Without You,” a ballad written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Badfinger, that solidified his place in music history. The song became a global phenomenon, earning Nilsson his second Grammy and cementing his reputation as one of the most versatile vocalists of his time. • ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ • Subscribe To The Remember This YouTube Channel Here ► https://geni.us/RememberThisChannel • ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ • 💥 View The Remember This Channel’s Top 10 Most Watched Videos:💥 • #1: ⏩ https://geni.us/WizardOfOzMovieTribute • #2: ⏩ https://geni.us/JohnLennonLostWeekend • #3: ⏩ https://geni.us/NatalieWoodTragicLoss • #4: ⏩ https://geni.us/ChateauMarmontSecrets • #5: ⏩ https://geni.us/TheJimiHendrixStory • #6: ⏩ https://geni.us/JimMorrisonLifeStory • #7: ⏩ https://geni.us/MarilynMonroeLifeStory • #8: ⏩ https://geni.us/BobHopeLifeStory • #9: ⏩ https://geni.us/BonScottLifeStory • #10: ⏩ https://geni.us/DorisDayLifeStory • My Gear: • My Main Camera ► https://geni.us/PanasonicFZ1000-20 • My Microphone ► https://geni.us/RodeNTUSBMicrophone • My Microphone Boom Arm ► https://geni.us/RodeMikeBoomArm • My Headphones ► https://geni.us/HD280ProHeadphones • My Wireless Headphones ► https://geni.us/BoseQC35HPhonesSilver • ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ • Subscribe To The Remember This YouTube Channel Here ► https://geni.us/RememberThisChannel • ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ • Remember This YouTube Channel • Suite 12, 5th Floor, Dymocks Building • 428 George Street, Sydney, NSW 2000 • ▶️ E: [email protected] • ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ • #harrynilsson #midnightcowboy #withoutyou #johnlennon • #thelostweekend • #historydocumentaries • #bio • #biography • #biographies
