(25 Jan 2022) Several dozen members of the NYPD and various religious organizations gathered outside a New York City Police Department precinct on Monday to mourn the death of Officer Jason Rivera, and the pray for the recovery of Officer Wilbert Mora. • Both officers were shot while responding to a call for a domestic dispute in Harlem Sunday night. • Lashawn J. McNeil, 47, had swung open a bedroom door and opened fire at the officers, authorities said. • Officer Sumit Sulan, a rookie who was shadowing the two wounded officers, shot McNeil as he tried to flee, striking him in the head and arm, police said. • At Monday's vigil, attendees said prayers, called for solidarity with law enforcement and an end to a recent spike in gun violence. • The numbers are not going down, it's like the coronavirus, when it spikes, the numbers are going up, said Officer Brian Downey, president of the Gay Officers Action League. Support our family because there's nothing more that we care about at the end of the day than making sure that your family members, your loved ones, your children get home safe. • Rivera, 22, was killed and Officer Wilbert Mora, 27, was gravely injured. • Mora was transferred Sunday from Harlem Hospital to NYU Langone Medical Center. • A memorial of candles and notes stood outside his Harlem apartment, not far from the scene of the shooting. • Rivera entered the police academy in November 2020 and had been assigned to the 32nd precinct in Harlem since graduating last May. He'd made 15 arrests in his short career, according to police records. • Mora entered the academy in October 2018 and had been assigned to the Harlem precinct since November 2019. He's racked up 33 arrests, police records show. • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter: / ap_archive • Facebook: / aparchives • Instagram: / apnews • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
