This summer’s alternative to oatmeal: bircher muesli! • It’s very popular in other places around the world, though not as much in the U.S. Let’s change that. It’s awesome. • I first discovered it on my recent trip to Australia — when I wanted something healthy and fueling for days full of lots of activity, but because I would start sweating the second I stepped outside, hot foods didn’t seem as appealing. Bircher muesli was the answer. • Another great thing about this dish is that it is SO customizable. So, for instance, I used almond milk here, but you can substitute that with any other plant-based milk or regular milk and it’ll be great. You could even just use water, or use apple juice, or orange juice! And use your favorite nuts, fruits, seeds, sweeteners. Make this dish YOURS. • In this video I’m showing a fairly classic rendition of this dish (including the apple gratings that its founder, Maximillian Bircher Benner thought to be so important), but then adding my own twist with coconut flakes and cinnamon. • Peek around online and you’ll see all kind of variations. Jamie Oliver uses apple juice to help soften the oats overnight. Deliciously Ella tops hers with banana slices. • Most of the time my bircher muesli recipe is simply determined by what it is my kitchen that day. • Bircher Muesli (here are the ingredients I used in this video): • 1/2 cup rolled oats • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon • 2 Tbsp. coconut flakes • 2 Tbsp. sunflower seeds • 2 tsp. cranberries • 2 Tbsp. maple syrup • A handful of apple gratings (approx. 3/4 cup grated apple) • A few squeezes of orange juice (approx. 2 Tbsp) • 1 cup almond milk • Topped with: • A dollop of greek yogurt • A few almonds • A few blackberries • Never miss a QKatie episode!
