See here: http://www.besgroup.org/2016/01/27/ol... • The pupating caterpillar of the Death’s Head Hawk Moth (Acherontia lachesis) burrows under the ground to form a small cavity. There, it remains entombed for the next 23 days or so before metamorphosis is complete and the emerging moth forces itself out to crawl to higher ground to dry and harden its wings. The cavity also offers the pupa protection from predators.
