This arrangement features the plainchant in unison on verse 1, plainchant with a cantus firmus (a top line usually sung in fifths and resolving to unisons or fifths) in verse 2, and 4 part harmony on verses 3-4; but still retaining several open fifths and octaves on key cadences. The text was written by Aurelius Prudentius in the 300s AD, after the council of Nicea established the Church's official stance on the nature of the Trinity. The belief in the trinity is established in the hymn's opening lines, and its affirmed that Christ is both human and divine. • Denominational note: while the style of this hymn may be associated by some with Catholicism, the text is biblically accurate and used across a wide variety of denominations. I am Baptist myself but appreciate the deep history, wonder, and beauty of this kind of sacred music.
