In this video we discuss the 8 common forms of process waste. To help make recalling the forms of waste easy, we use the acronym DOWNTIME. • DOWNTIME stands for Defects, Overproduction, Waiting, Non-utilized Talent, Transportation, Inventory, Motion, and Extra-Processing. • • The 8 common forms of waste include: • Defects • Waste caused by the process's inability to meet the customer's expectations. It occurs in the form of scrap or rework. • Overproduction • Not understanding customer demand. Creating more product than what is needed. • Waiting • Delays in the process that may cause idle parts or idle people. • Non-Utilized Talent • Waste caused by underutilizing talent, skills, and knowledge. • Transportation • Unnecessary movement of a product or materials. Often caused by poor facility layout and planning. • Inventory • Excessive products and materials not being processed. Can lead to increased storage cost and spoilage. • Motion • Unnecessary movement of people (operator, team members, and customer). • Extra-Processing • Waste caused by gold-plating or creating higher quality than is required. • • To learn more about waste, please visit us at www.thegreendotgroup.com.
