In a testimony my mother prepared for a Holocaust Day commemoration, she wrote, The Germans annexed Austria in March 13, 1938, one day before my 10th birthday. Hitler spoiled my birthday party since none of my friends came. After three years of living under Nazi occupation, my mother's family was on the list to be deported to a concentration camp when they managed to obtain a visa to Cuba. • My father, together with about 700 other Czech children, was saved through the efforts of Nicholas Winton, a remarkable English man, and traveled to England on the last transport prior to the war's outbreak in September, 1939. His parents and sister were later deported to Terezin and were gassed soon after. • Most of the children of the Vilna Ghetto were also murdered, but their voices live on in their Youth Hymn, Yugnt Himen. • Boston Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter Ring • http://circleboston.org/ • The Boston Workmen’s Circle Center for Jewish Culture and Social Justice is a multigenerational community, as well as an arts and culture center, where Jewish identity is rooted in cultural heritage and the pursuit of a better world.
