It is the official language, it is used in schools and on every TV and radio station, and practically everybody in China understands Mandarin. • If you are interested in Hong Kong or will be travelling there, I would advise learning Cantonese, as a lot of people in Hong Kong struggle to speak Mandarin. • There are many dialects of Chinese, including Mandarin and Cantonese. They vary a lot and are difficult to classify. In the north, Mandarin has always been prominent, but in South China each different city can have its own dialect and people from different cities can't necessary understand each other's dialects. In the cities in south China near Hong Kong, the natives often speak Cantonese, but there are so many migrants from all over the country that Mandarin has become the language that everybody uses to communicate. It is effectively the lingua franca for the whole of China.
