An integer is a member of the set of all whole numbers and their opposites. This means an integer is any positive or negative whole number and 0. This also means fractions and decimals are not included. It's a lot easier to say integer than it is to say positive or negative whole number . Positive numbers are greater than 0, and can be written with or without a + sign. Negative numbers are less than 0, and are always written with a - sign. 0 is not positive or negative, is a whole number, and an integer. 0 is its own opposite. The opposite of 0 is 0. We can identify an integer and its opposite by looking for numbers that are the same distance from 0, and on opposite sides of 0 on a number line. We use a horizontal number line and a vertical number line in this lesson.
