Hypertensive Retinopathy • With longstanding hypertension the retinal arteries narrow and the vessel walls thicken. A characteristic sign of hypertensive retinopathy is arteriovenous nicking; that is, venule compression occurs at arteriovenous crossings. Higher grades of hypertensive retinopathy can result in retinal edema, hard exudates, hemorrhages, and cotton wool spots.
