Bacterial metabolism (cellular respiration) includes glycolysis, fermentation, the citric acid cycle (or Krebs cycle), and the electron transport chain. Facultative anaerobes can use oxygen or no oxygen to produce ATP. Obligate aerobes require oxygen for growth. Obligate anaerobes cannot grow in the presence of oxygen, and rely on nitrogen or sulfur compounds (rather than oxygen) as their final electron acceptor. Many of the tests performed in microbiology lab are based on the metabolism of different organisms and their ability to utilize different sugars or amino acids in order to produce ATP.
