When you watch Smith play this tune live you'll see he often plays the hi-hat with both his right stick and the foot pedal at the same time. You'll notice it more near the end of the video. • • Video • Whether Smith does this for the unique sound the technique produces, the time-keeping advantages or simply because Smith just can't keep any limb still while drumming, using this technique does present a unique advantage in funk drumming – the “Es” and “Ahs” are always open on the hi-hat, making it easy to throw in an open hi hat accent with the left stick. • Funk drumming has a unique feel which often emphasizes the syncopated “Es” and “Ahs” in grooves and fills. The beats below use the double hi-hat technique, and beat #s 2 – 6 use an open hi-hat stick stroke.
