Armagnac has been quietly making a surge in the US, particularly among bourbon refugees. They seem especially enamored of the wood bombs, perhaps above all the woodiest, spiciest releases from l'Encantada mimicking the oaky notes of their beloved and now-unavailable older bourbons (see • 'Yak Attack: D'Aurensan 2009 v. L'Enc... , which includes the one finished in Weller... because I guess the l'Encantada folks need to pay bills too). • But I'm pretty sure the armagnacs in this video weren't made with those buyers in mind. Located in the heart of Bas-Armagnac, Domaine de Baraillon and the Claverie folks make 'yaks that are grungy, rustic, low-proof and occasionally tart, where the character of the brandy owes as much to the distillate and to their creepy, old-school cellar as to the casks. It's a distinctively unfashionable style (sometimes bordering on the sort of stuff you may find in old marcs), but if you're the kind of taster who can tolerate weirdness then boy howdy will you be rewarded. Stats: • SCEA Claverie 20 Year Old Bas-Armagnac (Dom. de Baraillon, Lannemaignan; Baco, Colombard, and Ugni Blanc, bottled 10/19/21; 42% ABV), 89/100 • Dom. de Baraillon Bas-Armagnac 2002 (SCEA Claverie, Lannemaignan; Baco, Colombard, and Ugni Blanc, bottled 11/15/20; 46% ABV), 88/100 • Dom. de Baraillon Bas-Armagnac 1987 (SCEA Claverie, Lannemaignan; Baco, Colombard, and Ugni Blanc, bottled 6/14/21; 43% ABV), 90+/100 • And yeah, that about says it all. Tiny production, limited US availability (unless you're in Cali), reasonable prices, buyers with open-minded palates only. • Extra special thanks to my Different Spirits on Patreon ( / differentspirits ) - • Anthony • Kingsbury bushcraft • Rob D • Steve Frazee • John Halliday • Jason Newquist • Matthew Ruiz • RumSquirrel • Dallas Shatel • Chris Sherman • Gordon W • Zach W
