What is Catheterization

In this video I will provide a look at the catheters used to start a cardiac diagnostic procedure, a left heart catheterization. The LHC is one of the most common types of coronary angiography procedures we perform in the cardiac cath lab. • Sterile supplies used for a diagnostic LHC include: • Cardiac Cath Pack • JL catheter • JR catheter • Pigtail (straight or angled) • 3-way stopcock • 0.35 wire ( j-wire) • micropuncture kit • The catheter used are the JL, JR, and the pig. These catheters can be used in any order and it is physician preference for what they choose to start with. Dr Melvin Judkins created the preshaped diagnostic catheters used for cardiac heart caths. These catheters are named the Judkins left, Judkins Right and Pigtail for Dr Judkins. The JL has a curve that engages the coronary arteries of the left system, the LAD and circumflex arteries. The JR has a curve that engages the arteries of the right system , the RCA. The pigtail is used to test the function of the ventricle or the hearts ejection fraction. • I hope this video provides some help in understanding catheters used for a heart catheterization and inspires you to consider a career in cardiac nursing. • #cardiaccathlab #CardiacNurse • #PCI #DrJudkins #LHC • I plan to include this video in a series titled: • Basics of CATH LAB • BASICS of CATH LAB will be a series to show the equipment commonly used during a cardiac catheterization procedure.
