Thank you for watching! Don't forget to subscribe. • Demolition of the property is underway. • Edwin Shaw Hospital, formerly known as Springfield Lake Sanitarium, is located in Lakemore, Ohio. Springfield Lake Sanitarium was developed for those suffering from tuberculosis. In 1908, Ohio state legislature passed an act declaring individuals with tuberculosis not be admitted to general hospitals due to the nature of the highly contagious disease. Each county in Ohio was required to provide facilities designated for the care of individuals with tuberculosis. Commissioners in Columbiana, Mahoning, Portage, Stark and Summit counties purchased the 100 acre plot in southeastern Summit County and began construction. • Upon completion, the $225,000 sanitarium opened its doors in February 1915 with 72 beds, powerhouse, water tower and sewage treatment plant. The sanitarium featured an operating room, treatment room, dental clinic and covered porches. Despite the modern hospital, the death rate in the early years was staggering. As many as 65 percent of incoming patients would die. In 1919, Summit County voters approved a $300,000 measure for the commissioners to acquire the interests of Columbiana, Mahoning, Portage and Stark counties. • In 1922, architects prepared plans for the $50,000 Sunshine Cottage, an annex for pediatric patients. The Sunshine Cottage featured 100 beds, dining room, kitchen, classroom, library and clinic. The inside was decorated with intricate murals of characters from Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood and Treasure Island, among others. • In 1934, Springfield Lake Sanitarium was renamed to Edwin Shaw Sanitarium after Edwin Coupland Shaw, a B.F. Goodrich executive. • The Sunshine Cottage was closed in June 1943. After closing, the building was used as a satellite campus for the Summit County Children's Home in 1947. In 1965, the Sunshine Center, a housing complex for destitute children opened in the Sunshine Cottage. It was renamed Andersen Village in 1977 but closed in 1985. • In 1967, Edwin Shaw Sanitarium was renamed Edwin Shaw Hospital. It became a rehabilitation facility for patients recovering from medical ailments. A skilled nursing program was added as well as an alcohol treatment program in 1974. A Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation unit opened in 1977 followed by the Adolescent Chemical Dependency Treatment Program in 1981. • A $6.7 million expansion was opened in December 1986, making Edwin Shaw Ohio's largest center for treating head-injury patients. • The hospital closed its doors for good in 2010 due to major financial losses and aging buildings and equipment.
