Part of the sickness was a string of inept leaders. Into this vacuum stepped Muhammad Ali in Egypt and led Egypt into the Industrial Age. • The Japanese largely rejected industrialization. But after their trade barriers were forced down by the United States (and Commodore Matthew Perry) they underwent a series of reforms that included industrialization and limited westernization so they were able to protect their ancient culture.
