Peter Behrens was a leading German architect, graphic and industrial designer, best known for his early pioneering AEG Turbine Hall in Berlin in 1909. He had a long career, designing objects, typefaces, and important buildings in a range of styles from the 1900s to the 1930s. He was a foundation member of the German Werkbund in 1907, when he also began designing for AEG, pioneered corporate design, graphic design, producing typefaces, objects, and buildings for the company. In the next few years, he became a successful architect, a leader of the rationalist / classical German Reform Movement of the 1910s. • After WW1 he turned to Brick Expressionism, designing the remarkable Hoechst Administration Building outside Frankfurt, and from the mid-1920s increasingly to New Objectivity. He was also an educator, heading the architecture school at Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1922 to 1936. As a well known architect he produced design across Germany, in other European countries, Russia and England. Several of the leading names of European modernism worked for him when they were starting out in the 1910s, including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius. • Born: 14 April 1868 • Hamburg, North German Confederation • Died: 27 February 1940 (aged 71) • Berlin, Prussian Free State, Nazi Germany • Nationality: German • Occupation: Architect • Buildings: AEG Turbine Factory • Projects: Deutscher Werkbund • Design philosophy: • Behrens had advocated for a functionally-guided approach to industrial design. “Design,” he wrote, “is not about decorating functional forms—it is about creating forms that accord with the character of the object and that show new technologies to advantage. • Behrens and AEG: How exactly Peter Behrens—a painter turned graphic designer—came to receive his first commissions from AEG in 1907 remains somewhat unclear. But the credentials Behrens brought to this appointment were substantial, and his success within the industrial powerhouse was immediate. • Quotes: • “Type is one of the most eloquent means of expression in every epoch of style. Next to architecture, it gives the most characteristic portrait of a period and the most severe testimony of a nation's intellectual status.” • Don't think that even an engineer, when he buys a motor, takes it to bits to scrutinize it. Even he as a specialist buys from the external appearance. A motor ought to look like a birthday present. • “I've always been a bit of a mix between art and technology. I used to paint a lot, but I'm not very good with my hands. It has always been a fusion between my computer gaming interests and being exposed to the rich data of society that we live in.” • Design is not about decorating functional forms - it is about creating forms that accord with the character of the object and that show new technologies to advantage. • TAG • #Towfiq_Hasan • #Adolf Loos • #Adrian Smith • #Albert Speer Jr • #Aldo Rossi • #Alejandro Aravena • #Alvar Aalto • #Alvaro Siza • #Amale Andraos • #Anne Tyng • #Antoine Predock • #Antoni Gaudí • #Aranda Pigem Vilalta • #Arata Isozaki • #Arne Jacobsen • #B.V.
