Delaware is SO small you might wonder… why is it even its own state? 🤯 Shouldn’t it just be part of Pennsylvania or Maryland? 🤔 Well, its history is wilder than you think! 🚀 • Back in the 1600s, northern Delaware was part of the Dutch colony New Netherland 🇳🇱, but the first permanent European settlers were Swedes in 1638 🇸🇪. The Dutch took over in 1655, and then the British fleet 🚢 arrived in 1664, seizing the region and renaming New Netherland as New York 🏙️. Although the Dutch briefly regained control in 1673, Delaware permanently became English territory 🇬🇧 in 1674 under the Treaty of Westminster ✍️. In 1682, William Penn lobbied to gain Delaware for Pennsylvania, forming the Lower Counties on the Delaware. But Delaware always had its own identity - a distinct culture, economy, and government 🏠💰.
