Cummins Barring Tool Location

If you want to use the Cummins barring tool to help set the valve lash on your 5.9 or 6.7, you may wonder where to access the flywheel. There is an access panel, facing forward, on the passenger side rear flange of the engine. Once you loosen the top and bottom bolt, the plate will swing down and give you access to two ports. The upper port allows access to the torque converter bolts, and the lower port is for the barring tool. I used various wobble joints and extensions to allow me to bar the engine from the front of the truck. I also marked the TDC line on the harmonic balancer with a black Sharpie, so it is easier to see. Additionally, I also used a small screwdriver to loosen the rubber boots on the two plastic lines coming off of the drive side of the valve cover.
