Who are the Chindians? Over the past several thousand years, China and India have emerged as two of the foremost human civilizations and have emerged as two of the most densely populated regions on the planet, however due to the numerous major geographic boundaries between them such as the Himalayas, the two have actually had rather limited interactions over history, mostly going through intermediaries in Central Asia, Tibet, Burma or elsewhere in Southeast Asia. There are many recorded instanced of Indians visiting East Asia and vice versa throughout history, but there were never any large-scale migrations between them and intermarriage between these wildly different races and cultures was extremely rare. It was only in the past several hundreds years when massive numbers of Chinese and Indian migrants would begin interacting and intermarrying with each other on a large scale in many regions around the world, mainly in some of Britain’s overseas colonies such as Malaysia, Singapore, Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica, Mauritius and elsewhere. • The offspring of these multiracial unions became known as “Chindians” a rather apt and humorous portmanteau In the past, the majority of marriages between the two were mainly with Chinese fathers and Indian mothers as most Chinese in these far-flung areas were unable to bring their wives and family with them, however nowadays for whatever reason the reverse is true, with the vast majority of Chindians having Indian fathers and Chinese mothers. I’m not entirely sure the reason for this, but it may be due to the highly patriarchal nature of Indian society, while China has recently become more Westernized in many ways when it comes to marriage and gender relations (although they are nowhere near the level the West is, of course).
