The Gion Matsuri is a series of celebrations of the Yasaka Shrine that take place in Kyoto during the whole month of July. On July 10, in a ceremony held in front of the City Hall, three different traditional dances were performed by local elementary school students. • The first dance is called Sagi Odori, meaning Heron Dance. This dance has more than 600 years of history. • The second is called Komachi Odori. This dance remained unused for many years, until it was performed again in 1962. • The last dance, called Gion Matsuri Ondo, was performed by cute little girls wearing lovely Yukata. This dance was created in 1957, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the restoration of the Gion Matsuri after World War II • Here some photos form the event: • https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s... • For more info on this and other festivals, take a look at our Facebook page: • / discoverkyoto • **********************************************
