So who remembers Beachcomber Bay? It ran as part of the Milkshake strand on Channel 5 around the turn of the millennium, and it featured presenter Jenny, sailor Salty Dog, cat friend Bertha, retired avian war hero Sam Seagull, fishy comedian Colin the Cod, Mr and Mrs Sludge, and the boots of Captain Bob. Besides the main plot, we're also treated to educational inserts, simple games, a look through the magic telescope, a story but of an unconventional sort, and a nice singalong song to open and close proceedings. There's a very jokey tone to it all (which I like a lot) with more gags than average given the target audience, and, all things considered, it's all very entertaining. • This particular episode (which carries a 1999 date at the end, despite IMDB saying the show ran from 2001-2003 - I'm certain that's wrong, and this one may even come from the second series) revolves around a terrible pong that no-one can get to the bottom of, the game is a what's-under-the-buckets memory test, the educational bit shows a fish market, and the story... Well, I described these as unconventional, and what I mean is it involves Sam spinning a yarn, talking absolute nonsense, clearly making it up as he goes along. An interesting take on the oldest of old conventions. I'm not entirely sure why they took that route, but it works. • The puppeteers are credited as Neil Sterenberg (who also made them), Sheila Clark, and Joe Greco. Neil plays Sam Seagull, Sheila plays Bertha, and Joe plays Salty, as you can see here: •   / 990969512995454978   • Joe doubles up as Colin the Cod, and he and Sheila are also the Sludges in this. One of Neil's earliest credits is on Wizadora, which Joe worked on as well. Casey-Lee Jolleys, meanwhile, found fame as a young dance world champion in multiple styles, before settling into presenting and then straight acting roles. In fact, Casey and Joe coincidentally both appeared at the 1985 Children's Royal Variety Performance - Joe obviously with his Pink Windmill mates, while Casey did a sort of tap duet with Roy Castle. I doubt any of this was ever discussed on the set of Beachcomber Bay. • This recording begins and ends with clips of Milkshake, presented by Eddie Matthews, with the birthdays at the start and a promo for Tickle, Patch and Friends rounding things off. Oh, and there's a brief glimpse of Martin (what's his surname again?) reading the news, too. • Huge thanks to Joe for lending me this tape. • (To the best of my knowledge, the contents of this video have never been available commercially anywhere in the world.
