This is the the Cassini RPWS plasma wave audio from the main engine burn that occurred during Saturn orbital insertion on July 1, 2004, about 0112 SCET. Select CC for captions. • The animation is from NASA/JPL and the audio doesn't correspond except for the beginning of the main engine burn. The RPWS instrument was sampling time-domain plasma wave amplitudes at a rate of about 28k samples per second in short bursts with intervening small time gaps. Unfortunately, running the samples together as if they were continuously sampled results in the primary feature you hear which sounds like a rattle and is not real. The low-frequency rumble, however, is authentic and sounds much like a rocket in the atmosphere. • We don't know that the observed signal is a plasma wave effect. It may be due to onboard mechanisms. It's a plausible, but untested theory that the noise is due to plasma turbulence. Note that a human ear in space wouldn't hear this, but an ultra-sensitive microphone might. The plasma wave turbulence is detected with electric antennas which are sensitive to the long-range electric fields produced by the ionized particles associated with the exhaust plume. Charged particles in space can propagate waves via electric and magnetic fields and do not need to physically collide in the way neutral particles do in the atmosphere in order to propagate sound waves. • Again, the audio is from about a minute around the beginning of the main engine burn. The animation also shows the inbound ring plane crossing, but that audio is omitted. Finally, we underscore the possibility that these signals have little to do with plasma waves and are primarily due to onboard effects. A detector on a separate spacecraft in the vicinity of such a rocket burn could resolve the issue. • For more information on the Cassini project see • http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/ • For more Cassini RPWS information see • http://www-pw.physics.uiowa.edu/cassini • For more information on space audio see • http://space-audio.org/ • For more videos related to space audio see my YouTube channel • / voyagerpws • Please note the disclaimers under About Space Audio on my YouTube channel.
