Learn how to weld a reluctor wheel to a crankshaft using pulsed TIG on the Dynasty 400 TIG welder — and why it is important in racing applications. • A typical job when engine building is to attach the reluctor wheel to the crankshaft. In racing applications, this is important to ensure the wheel does not move and affect the timing of the engine. Darrell Reed, fabricator/welder at Ilmor Engineering and Andy Weyenberg, motorsports manager at Miller Welders explain how to use pulsed TIG welding to do this. Because the reluctor wheel is a mild steel stamping and the crankshaft material is 4340, you must use a filler metal capable of welding these dissimilar metals together. Reed and Weyenberg use ER 80SD2 filler material and a Dynasty 400 TIG welder.
