During his journey, after being captured, he meets a woman, Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn - who also starred in Basic Instinct) and his adopted young daughter Enola (Tina Majorino - who also starred in Napoleon Dynamite), seeking to reach Dryland, the only land still emerging. They offer to release him in exchange for the trip.
