Russia this week debuted the third submarine in its new Borei class of nuclear powered attack submarines. The Vladimir Monomakh was unveiled at the Sevmash shipbuilding yard in the White Sea town of Severodvinsk. • The Borei class submarines a draft of 10m and measure 170m long. They are designed to dive to depths of 480m. They are intended to replace Russia's Delta III and Typhoon Class submarines. The craft's pump jet propulsion system and hydrodynamically designed hull means the Borei class are reportedly significantly quieter than existing submarines. • • The Borei class has six torpedo tubes and can carry 16 to 20 Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles. The Bulava is a three stage solid propellant and liquid fuel missile with a range of more than 9,000 kilometers. The Bulava can carry six warheads and up to four more decoys. Each warhead has an estimated yield of 150 kilotons, several times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. • This animation shows the Borei class submarine and the Bulava submarine launched intercontinental ballistic missile. • ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. • Sign up for a free trial of News Direct's news animations at http://newsdirect.nextanimationstudio... • To subscribe to News Direct or for more info, please visit: • http://newsdirect.nextanimationstudio...
