Saint Nicolas Parade, Nancy France 3 December 2022. Over 100,000 people attended this parade, and more than 4 tons of candy was distributed to the spectators. Which excited all the children, especially since “Sweets for the Crowd” had been discarded during Covid! This year’s theme for the parade is “GLASS and LIGHT”. It was rather cold out, but no one seemed to mind after the parade got started. It lasted about 90 minutes, and I would highly recommend showing up around an hour or so prior to the beginning of the parade to get a good spot, because it gets crowed quickly. We arrived around 4 pm, the parade started at 5:30 pm, and after the last float passed by, we headed to our hotel room (which was a 2-minute walk) warmed up, and then we went to “Place Stanislas”, to watch the end of the parade again in the square, and to hear Santa address the crowd. Then we stayed for their amazing light show, which ended with a huge bag, and watched the Famous “Evil Bucher” story unfold on the front of the main building in the square. In the video I explain a little about the French Sanit Nicholas his helper “Pere Fouettard” Translated – “Whipping Father” who’s job it is to punish Bad Children by whipping them or even abducting them…His job is to scare the naughty kids into being good. While Saint Nicholas focuses on rewarding good children with gifts. As you know, Saint Nicholas Day has been celebrated throughout Europe for more than a thousand years. And his mean sidekick is known by different names in other countries where Saint Nicholas is recognized. Just to name a few…. Schmutzli in Switzerland, the Netherlands have Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) and in Southern Germany and Austria, he is known as Krampus or Knect Ruprect, oh and Austria also has a witch “Frau Perchta”. Their job is the same in each country, to punish naughty children. Nothing like the American Elf on the Shelf. Nope, they whip, beat, and even abduct bad kids. In France “Le Pere Fouettard”—The whipping father, carries a “martinet” which is a short whip, with a wooden handle and leather lashes. These Martinets were used in schools and homes in France up until the 1970’s. So where did this Le Pere Fouettard come from you might ask? Well, you only need to look to the most famous story in France. The story starts with an Evil Butcher…. • At the end of the video, I pass on some travel tips, where to stay, what to visit, and post a few web sites for those who want more info on visiting Nancy France.
