The medical community viewed the results of Dr. Adina Michael-Titus's study with skepticism because it was the very first time a lipid was shown to have clear neuroprotective properties in a model of traumatic injury. What did she find? • In this episode Drs. Harris Jackson are joined by Dr. Adina Michael-Titus, who is a professor of neuroscience at the Center for Trauma Sciences in Barts, the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. She is trained as both a neuroscientist and a pharmacologist and is interested in developing new therapies for traumatic spinal cord and brain injuries. And in this area of research, she's been working extensively with omega-3s. • Test your Omega-3 Index at home: https://omegaquant.com/omega-3-index-... • Use code: OQYOUTUBE10 for a one time, 10% discount • ________________________________________ • OmegaMatters is a podcast hosted by Drs. Kristina Harris Jackson and Bill Harris, which will help put some of the most important research studies into context. Together and with invited guests, they will focus mainly on omega-3 fatty acids, but from time to time will explore other corners of the fatty acid world as well as other fat soluble nutrients like vitamin D. In many cases, they will interview the primary authors of research studies, so that these guests can guide Drs. Jackson and Harris through the findings. The mission of this series is to help people better understand the nuances of nutrition science, so that they can apply those lessons to their lives. • Who is OmegaQuant? • OmegaQuant is an independent, CLIA-certified lab that offers Omega-3 Index, Prenatal DHA and Mother’s Milk DHA testing to researchers, clinicians and the public. • Dr. Harris is an internationally recognized expert on omega-3 fatty acids and how they can benefit patients with heart disease. He obtained his Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from the University of Minnesota and did post-doctoral fellowships in Clinical Nutrition and Lipid Metabolism with Dr. Bill Connor at the Oregon Health Sciences University. • His interest in omega-3 fatty acids began with his postdoctoral work when he published his first study on the effects of salmon oil on serum lipids in humans (1980). Since that time he has been the recipient of five NIH grants for studies on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) on human health. • He has more than 300 publications relating to fatty acids, including omega-3s, in medical literature and was an author on two American Heart Association scientific statements on fatty acids: “Fish Consumption, Fish Oil, Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Cardiovascular Disease” (2002), and “Omega-6 Fatty Acids and Risk for Cardiovascular Disease” (2009) both published in the journal Circulation. • Dr. Harris co-invented the Omega-3 Index in 2004 and made it commercially available to the research community and the public in 2009. To date, the Omega-3 Index has been used as the standard measure of omega-3 status in more than 200 clinical studies. • Dr. Harris is also a Professor in the Department of Medicine in the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. • Dr. Harris moved on as OmegaQuant’s President in late 2020 to establish the Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI), where he will go back to his roots of conducting research on fatty acids and health.
