I was the “kamidana” guy. What that means is that whenever an antique Japanese Shinto “god-shelf” or Buddhist altar came up at the local Shizuoka antique auction, all of my dealer colleagues could count on me to buy it. This was partly because Japanese religious items were my specialty, but mostly this was because very few Japanese antique dealers wanted to purchase or even handle any religious items from a dead person’s house. This meant my own house and business was always crammed with an amazing range of altars, statues, religious text and even priest’s garb and ceremonial paraphernalia. Those were good days. And I always enjoyed handling such items, and wondering after the life, beliefs and thoughts of those who once cherished and cared for these items in their homes.
