Piano exam piece • Albumleaf • • Claude Debussy, a very influential French composer of the late 19th and early 20th century, studied piano, theory and composition atht eParis Conservatiore from 1872 to 1884. As a winner of the 'Prix de Rome', a highly coveted composition prize, he travelled to Rome and stayed there from 1885-1887. He often toured England, Russia and other European countries, performing his own music as a pianist and conductor. • Debussy's mature piano music is regarded by many as the most original contribution to the repertoire since Chopin. Page d'album (albumleaf) is a miniature example of his late style. It was composed in 1915 in aid of those wounded in the first world war, but not published until 1933, long after Debussy's death. The title 'page d'album' was common in the 19th century and originally used for a short piano piece written in the autograph album of a friend or patron.
