Dermatitis herpetiformis is a chronic skin condition characterized by eruptions of burning and intensely pruritic papules and vesicles. The underlying skin may be normal or erythematous. The most common sites affected are the scalp, back, buttocks, and extensor surfaces of the limbs. The face, groin, palms, and soles are usually spared. The papules and vesicles usually occur in clusters, giving a similar appearance to herpetic lesions, hence the etymological origin of the name. As the pruritus (i.e., itchiness) can be overwhelming, the vesicles may not be present on physical examination due to scratching. Instead, there may only be visible excoriations, erosions, abrasions, and crusts. It may also be noted that the burning sensation was relieved following rupture of the vesicles. Areas of depigmentation or hyperpigmentation may occur following resolution of the lesions. • 📺 Subscribe To My Channel and Get More Great Quizzes and Tutorials • / @med4vl • #FOAMed #MedEd #dermatology • Disclaimer: All the information provided by Medical Education for Visual Learners and associated videos are strictly for informational purposes only.
