This video will help you with the differences. • With checkmate, the king of the player who is on the move is attacked by one of your pieces - this is called checking the king. If the king has no legal way to escape check - either by fleeing, capturing the checking piece, or blocking the checking piece with another piece - then it is checkmate and the game is over. The player delivering the checkmate is the winner. • Stalemate is different in that the player whose turn it is to move cannot make a legal move, but it NOT in check - e.g. his king is not directly attacked by an opposing piece. This also ends the game, but is a draw. • This video provides a few examples of checkmate and stalemate.
