The work begins with the dark and sorrowful Introit and follows with the slower and more subdued Kyrie . Composed while choirmaster at the church of the Madeleine in Paris, Requiem in the original 1888 version, included - Introit et Kyrie , Sanctus , Pie Jesu , Agnus Dei and In Paradisum . Offertory and Libera Me were added later. Fauré sought to create a contemplative work that would provide solace to those grieving by holding out the promise of eternal rest, and peace for the departed.
