Android is open source, and therefore has captured the imaginations of developers and enthusiasts alike such that it runs on nearly 80% of the world's smartphones. Because of it's popularity, it has been adapted, customized, worked, and reworked by vendors and the community itself to produce custom variants of the OS, also known as ROM's.
