I finished up the chair you saw me weaving in last week's video. •    • The most gratifying part of making a ...   • The seat was woven with Smoked Flat Reed. I was initially drawn to this material as an easier to find and easier to work substitution for the traditional hickory bark used in these chairs. But the first time I used it I was disappointed. It was lackluster compared to the hickory bark. • • Then it dawned on me that a lack of luster was exactly the problem. • • When you shave hickory bark and give it a couple coats of oil, it develops a subtle sheen with use. When you merely oil this reed it still looks dull. Almost tired or dirty. • • So I decided to try the same hard-wax oil finish I typically use on the frames of my chairs. After two or three coats, a sheen began to build and brought the reed to life. • • I'm glad I gave it another shot. It looks great with this cherry. And as the wood darkens, their colors will blend together and look even better. • My remote students and I are taking the next week to get some finish on the frames of our chairs. Then we'll be ready to weave the seats. • • If you'd like to learn to make one of these chairs, but you can't make it to an in-person class, consider taking the class remotely. You'll get a copy of both the Arm Chair and Side Chair manuals, plus unlimited access to hours of instructional videos, and a guide who'll provide all the support you need. • • Just contact me through my site and we'll set up a call. • https://www.jointeffort.net • This week's video... • • While it doesn't cover the complete process from start to finish, this week's 17 minute video will answer most of the questions that come up while you get started weaving with hickory bark. • • You learn: • How to tie on your first strip of bark • How to calculate the taper for the warp • The right amount of tension • How to splice your strips • How to make the turn from warp to weft • What to do if you need to take a short break • If you'd like to take an in-person class... I have an open spot! • • If you'd like to build a Boggs designed Berea Ladderback (Arm Chair or Side Chair) with just one other student, this is your chance. • Ladderback Class, February 18-24. • https://www.jointeffort.net/product-p... • • If you're not sure you're ready to tackle an entire chair, you can sign up for my 4-day Introduction to Post and Rung Chair Making class (March 22-25 or November 15-18). • https://www.jointeffort.net/product-p...
