The gun was designed based on a NATO request for a new PDW (personal defense weapon) for support staff - tank drivers, pilots, medical staff, etc - that was capable of defeating light body armor. Most PDW's or SMG (sub machine guns) of the time - such as the MP5 by H K, were chambered in 9mm. The 5.7x28mm that the P90 was built around is a lighter cartridge, traveling faster and flater, and with a spitzer (pointed) bullet better of far better penetration than 9mm ball rounds. • The PS90 is the semi automatic version of the firearm, otherwise appearing and functioning the same as the select fire (full auto capable) P90. It is very pleasant to shoot, very low recoil, and appears to be quite accurate. This is the SBR (short barrel rifle) version of the P90, having a 10.4 barrel.
